Last Wednesday, we welcomed members old and new joining us for a morning of free-flowing discussion on the opportunities and challenges for innovation in Australia.
Kindly hosted by Deloitte, we opened the conversation on the role of digital in developing community within an organisation. Jason Bender, Partner at Deloitte Digital, shared some of the activity that they have been working on internally. No stranger to innovation, Deloitte have been on the innovation journey for over a decade and are now scaling innovation practices within their organisation using a mix of technology and culture hacks. The message being that technology and systems are now available to let everyone in every organisation become a technology innovator. The cost has dramatically reduced and our new generation of staff come with many of the skills and understandings required.
Deloitte’s recent ‘hack to dot’ innovation challenge is proof that breakthrough innovation and incremental innovation can come from your own staff.
We followed this with an introduction to the work that Hargraves is doing in helping its members leverage technology as an enabler to their innovation practices. We discussed the work we have been doing with Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL) and the Printing Industry around collaboration and announced the Collaborative Circles platform which is in beta with our early adopters. The Circle has proven to be extremely successful in face to face workshops and will soon be available as an online application. Dr. Barry McGookin added to Dougal’s explanation that his work in face to face workshops for the food sector have delivered $10m’s to local businesses. Barry is the first fully accredited facilitator of the Collaborative Circle accredited in Australia.
As a member-driven organisation, we see an important role for technology to enhance the collaboration we cultivate in the Institute, but we do not see it leading that interaction. To this end, we announced a New Advisory Group – Technology Solutions for Innovation and Collaboration and are seeking members to join us in identifying the right solutions to support our members’ innovation practices.
Allan Ryan, Executive Director of Hargraves, then gave a synopsis of the activity taken by the Institute and its members over the last twelve months.
Finally Dr. Mirjana Prica presented with Melinda Mackay on the journey of a new food company. Belinda started Sugar Free Solutions after her 11 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. At age 11, her son cried because he would never have another birthday cake. This insight was the driving force behind Belinda’s passion and innovation journey.
We thank Deloitte for hosting our Melbourne Member Congress September 2014.
